Peg o' My Heart
and Other Favorite Song Hits
1912 & 1913

Edited by
Stanley Appelbaum

Once Tin Pan Alley tuned up, the outpouring of popular songs was little short of amazing. By 1912, the business of creating hits was firmly in place and family pianos were stacked high with the sheet music of favorite songs. Variety stars sang them on vaudeville stages across America and songpluggers played and sang them in music stores everywhere. Neighborhood and family singalongs circulated new songs even more quickly.

This wonderful collection of thirty-six popular songs from 1912 and 1913 vividly illustrates how many hits could be generated in a relatively short time, and how many of them have weathered the years to become standard favorites we still enjoy. Here are "Peg o' My Heart," "You Made Me Love You," "Moonlight Bay," "Waiting for the Robert E. Lee," "My Melancholy Baby," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "Ballin' the Jack," "Danny Boy," "Sweethearts," "The Memphis Blues," and 26 other perennial favorites.

Many of these hits were "one-shots" by writers who may have written numerous songs, but whose big successes were few. Others were written by the most illustrious composers of popular music and light opera of the period, among them Irving Berlin, Victor Herbert, W. C. Handy and Rudolf Friml. This superb edition includes complete lyrics, full piano arrangements and black-and-white reproductions of the original sheet music covers. Full of familiar favorites, it's the perfect songbook for your next singalong, or for your own private moments with some of the most delightful songs of all time.
