Engelbert Humperdinck
An instant and overwhelming success upon its first performance in 1893, Hänsel and Gretel has captivated audiences of all ages ever since. Engelbert Humperdinck combined the simplicity of German folk tunes with the sophistication of Wagnerian technique in a fairy-tale opera, based on the story by the brothers Grimm.
The opera originated with a request by the composer's sister for music to accompany a play for her children. Humperdinck obliged with a Singspiel, consisting of a play with 16 songs and piano accompaniment, which he later presented to his fiancee as an engagement present. Recognizing the work's potential, the composer eventually developed his little musical into a full-scale opera. Richard Strauss, who conducted Hänsel and Gretel's premiere, proclaimed it "a masterpiece of the highest quality." Broadcast from London's Covent Garden in 1923, the popular work was the first complete opera ever aired on radio, and eight years later it was the first to be transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera.
This vocal score contains a complete piano reduction of the score and a classic English singing translation of the text. Students, performers, and music lovers will be enchanted with this inexpensive, high-quality reproduction of an authoritative edition.
