Spirits From Ainu

For the first time ever, the Discovery Firm has created this library of Ainu sounds. They recorded the beautiful music and voices of Ms. Umeko Ando, who is a Mukkuri player represented Ainu musicians. Ms. Ando played Mukkuri solo and sang lullabies and work songs transmitted from generation to generation in her home with a Jaw Harp player.

"SPIRITS FROM AINU" comprises the following Ainu instruments and voices:

Mukkuri (Jaw Harp)

This is one of the represented Ainu instruments made of bamboo. The length is 10cm and the width is 1.5cm around. Animal cries and natural sounds are improvised through Mukkuri.

Tonkori (Stringed instrument)

This means "sounds each other" in Ainu and the body describes women. The all 5 strings are open bowstrings.

Upopo (song)

This is Ainu songs in which short melody is repeated over and over. The songs and rhythms are switched at the exquisite timing.

They are improvised in various situations without any specific melody or music. The sounds are varied with the ambience each time.
