| MIDI Classics History |
Originally I planned to use songs I sequenced as background for my real estate commercials (I was a broker, but now concentrate solely on my music business), then I decided to sell them. I got an 800 number and a charge card terminal, placed ads in EM and various guitar magazines, and wrote a customer contact and invoicing system on my PC.
At first, I did whatever music I liked. Then I decided to focus on classical guitar music, especially studies of an educational nature. MIDI is an ideal medium for this material.
For my first major effort, I transcribed The Baroque Guitar and Frederick Noad, my former teacher, graciously agreed to let me sell it. Later I did two of his other books: The Renaissance Guitar and 100 Graded Classical Guitar Studies. Soon after I did the Complete Bach Lute Music, still perhaps my favorite for the incredible skill of the composer. In 2002 we released Fernando Sor's Complete Guitar Works. We continue to expand the collection as time allows.
After a test mailing to the complete Guitar Foundation of America membership, I found the market for MIDI classical guitar very thin, indeed, and added thousands of other music products such as software, sequences, samples, hardware, cables, videos, and books to my catalog, to better meet the needs and tastes of my customers.
I continue to develop and enhance new products as time allows, and now have quite a few! (Over 1400 songs) Recently we released Ouverture du Jeune Henri. Our Classical Guitar Study Pack has over 640 guitar studies for only $49.95. All are now available on CD-ROM.
Music software and hardware together now make up over 80% of our sales. Sample CDs and cables have grown in share recently.
In December, 1995, I set up this World Wide Web site, and have improved it continuously ever since. It now has a secure online store containing hundreda of megabytes: a page for every product, thousands of thumbnails and product photos, screen shots, links to audio files and demo downloads, etc. It has reached more customers than any other marketing method, and sales have grown enormously. MIDI Classics is now one of the largest mail order music companies in the Northeast United States. We have tens of thousands of customers, and have shipped to every state in the USA and over 65 foreign countries.
