M

M is an interactive algorithmic MIDI composition program for the Macintosh. When it first appeared in 1986, many musicians and composers were attracted to its powerful implementation of the idea of shaping music as you hear it unfold. Our goals in releasing M 2.5 are to introduce it to new generation of musicians and to provide M’s old friends with a new version that adds compatibility with OMS and Quicktime. Using M, you create patterns of notes and chords that repeat subject to variations you adjust as you listen to the results. Some of the tools you have for shaping the music include rhythm and accent cycles, time distortion, groups of program and MIDI channel assignments, transpositions, and random note ordering algorithms. M can also be operated from a MIDI controller in live performance situations. At a higher level, yo can organize settings of the program into snapshots and then sequence these chang’ in slideshows. Once you have something you like—from a simple rhythmic texture an entire composition—you can save your work as a MIDI file and import it into a sequencer. A recent review of M in Electronic Musician magazine concluded, “M is a unique and powerful instrument for composition and experimentation, as welt as something of a software classic.
