MSP
MSP provides over 75 objects for synthesis and signal processing that work inside Opcode’s Max
graphical music programming environment. You construct “patches” using audio cords that route
signals from one processing module to another. Modules include
wavetable oscillators, sampling, multi-track hard disk recording and playback, filters,
delay lines, envelopes, a VST plug-in host, and signal display units
such as a meter and oscilloscope. MSP objects work together in an elegant and powerful way
that surpasses any other modular system in its ability to fine-
tune control over audio processing. Using the hundreds of Max oblects available for user
interface construction and MIDI control, it’s possible to build complete
audio processing applications. You can even freely distribute standalone versions
of your creations. MSP is admittedly a challenge to master, but it comes with
a 250-page manual with over 25 interactive tutorials that teach you synthesis and
audio processing fundamentals as well as an extensive on-line help system.
Numerous examples that demonstrate the unique capabilities of MSP are also pro
vided. MSP supports all malor PCI audio I/O hardware including cards from
Digidesign, Korg, and Sonorus as well as any ASIO-compatible hardware. With the
addition of pluggo (now included free), MSP becomes the first development envi-
ronment for VST plug-ins. MSP is in use at hundreds of universities and research
institutions worldwide, where in addition to its use as a teaching and composition
tool, it’s being used to develop the next generation of audio hardware and software.
List price US$295, available in downloadable and packaged versions.
