Bizet, Georges-L'ARLESIENNE SUITES NOS. 1 & 2 IN FULL SCORE
|
|
Perhaps best known as the composer of Carmen, Bizet brought the qualities that distinguish that work-
vitality, rich color, abundant and varied melody and masterly orchestration-to his incidental music for
Alphonse Daudet's play LArlesienne (1872). Although the first performance of the work met with a hostile reception,
one critic proclaimed the score a masterpiece and urged all young musicians to study it. A model of how
music and the spoken word can be married for maximum effect, LArlesienne was revived in 1885, at which time
Bizet rescored four excerpts for full orchestra, making a number of important additions. This group of pieces,
now known as LArle~sienne Suite No. I, was received with great enthusiasm. The second suite was assembled by
the composer Ernest Guiraud after Bizet's death. Masterpieces of orchestral color, both suites have long been
staples of the orchestral repertoire (Schwann lists 30 recordings of both). Reproduced here from the authoritative
Breitkopf & Härtel editions, they will delight any musician or music lover.
